The journey of My School Plate Foundation began with a single observation by our founder, Fildaross Swai, during her sophomore year at Westminster College. After witnessing a young student in Dar es Salaam struggling to choose between his education and a meal, Fildaross was inspired to act. Her dedication earned her the prestigious Middlebury Projects for Peace Award twice—in both 2022 and 2023—providing the vital spark needed to launch what has now become a thriving nonprofit.
Today, the program has grown from a student-led proposal into a cornerstone of the community at Bomani Primary School. Beyond serving over 200,000 meals to date, Fildaross’s initiative has successfully installed a solar-powered well, providing the first source of clean, reliable water for both the school and the local area. Her story is a testament to how academic passion, when combined with a commitment to one’s home country, can rewrite the future for hundreds of children.
